Volunteering with CBHR

There are many fun ways to get involved with Carolina Basset Hound Rescue. The old saying goes, “it takes a village…” and that is very true here at CBHR. The life of our organization is dependent on its volunteers. By volunteering you are able not only to help the hounds, but also to make new friends along the way! CBHR has volunteer opportunities that require as little as one hour a week. Explore different opportunities below.
The Carolina Basset Hound Rescue program helps bassets throughout North and South Carolina. That is a lot of area to cover. We are constantly in need of volunteers to help get a basset from a shelter to the veterinary hospital or his foster home.

Sometimes a basset may simply need a ride to and from the veterinarian. We also need volunteers to help move our dogs to their new homes. Travel distances usually are 45 minutes to two hours each way, but can vary widely. You can join our Volunteer Mailing List and you will be emailed directly when a dog needs a ride. You can expect to receive about two to three emails per week at most. If you can help great, if not, just hit delete!

A very important part of the process of getting a basset into his foster home and his forever home is the applicant’s home visit. Carolina Basset Hound Rescue requires that any family wishing to foster or adopt a basset hound have an approved home visit.

We receive applications from all over both states and always need volunteers to conduct these visits. The more timely we can complete a home visit, the sooner a basset gets a new home.

Another aspect of the home visit it that you give the applicant a name and a face to CBHR. So much of our work is accomplished online. The home visit helps make the process more personal for the applicant.

We have written instructions to guide you through the process. If you would like a seasoned veteran to go with you on your first visit, just ask. Many are willing to help.

The best way for us to showcase our dogs and the organization is to participate in local events. Not only is it great to get our dogs out there, but hanging out with your volunteer friends is fun too!

Our dogs are featured at a variety of events throughout both states. We participate in small events like meet and greet get-togethers at local pets stores and large events like the Great Grapes Wine & Food Festival in Charlotte, NC, the Charleston Holiday Parade, and the Raleigh St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The only way CBHR can continue to staff these events is by having volunteers to help. Events usually last approximately two to four hours, but are often broken into shifts. These are a great way to meet people and get our bassets out there. You can join our Volunteer Mailing List and you will be emailed directly when there is an event that needs to be staffed. Other Ways to Help

In addition to the above three areas, we need people to help in other ways.

Is your hobby photography? You know how a great basset picture speaks volumes. We need people to visit with our foster bassets and capture their spirit on film. Great photographs of events are always needed too.

Are you good with record-keeping? We keep extensive records about the bassets in our care and can always use help recording that data.

Do you like to talk with other people about all things basset? You might like to check in with foster families to see how things are going, or follow up with adopters to see how their new basset is settling in.

Do you like to organize? Maybe you would like to plan an event or spearhead a project.

The world of rescue is hard, sometimes sad, but also wonderfully warm, inspiring and touching. Our many volunteers passionately give their time, energy, love and money to make this endeavor successful. The rewards of a drool-y basset kiss that says, “thank you, you gave me a chance I would have never had” makes it all worth it. Won’t you come volunteer with us?
