About Me
Hey, y’all! My name is Kelce, and I’m a 2-year-old boy who is still learning how to be my best basset self. When I first came to CBHR, I was timid around people and didn’t like to be touched. They think maybe I was threatened or abused at some point because I would roll over on my back like I was trying to submit.
But my fosters’ patience and consistency are helping me trust people, and now I love to be petted and really have learned to love belly rubs. I am working with a trainer to learn my house manners and gain more confidence in myself and my people. My fosters think I should continue my training with my new family to help me keep getting better and better.
I love to play with the other dogs and can be a little rough with them, but other than a scuffle over a favorite toy we have gotten along fine. I mostly ignore the cat but I am not fully “cat tested” yet.
Like most bassets, I love the sound of my own voice and bark when the delivery drivers come around, as well as first thing in the morning. It’s a long time from dinner to breakfast. I enjoy being around children, but my fosters don’t think I should be in a home with young children because I’m terrified of loud noises and tend to run in fear when I’m approached. Even the sound of popcorn popping terrifies me, and I hate thunderstorms.
My housetraining is a work in progress. I do best when my foster takes me out by myself rather than going out with the other dogs because I get too distracted. I will need a yard with a sturdy, secure fence and a lot of supervision because I love to dig – sometimes I bury my toys in the yard.
My trainer is also working with my on socialization, and I’ve gone to Lowe’s and PetSmart to help me be more confident in crowds. My fosters hope I will soon be able to go to doggy daycare because I sure have a LOT of energy. They don’t think I would do well in an apartment because of my barking.
I’m a small guy and my vet thinks I should keep my weight down because one of my legs is a bit misshapen – but I don’t let that stop me! I try to escape from a wire crate but I do well in an airplane (plastic) crate. I eat and sleep in there!
I’ve made so much progress in the short time I’ve been with my fosters that I expect to be a brand-new dog by the time I’m ready to meet my forever family. Keep checking back, and if you think you could give me a calm, loving, patient home, contact CBHR and ask about me, Kelce!
