*Ralphie has been adopted!*
Good day, everyone! My name’s Ralphie, and my path to CBHR was through a family that picked me up at a busy intersection in western North Carolina. They contacted CBHR and I found a foster home, and my foster family has patiently worked with me for a few months now.
As you can see, I am one handsome hound! But nobody’s perfect.
I am in need of a very special home with a person or people who have the patience and love to work with me on my terms. I can’t explain what happened to me before I came to CBHR, but I have had bouts of aggression. My fosters are so caring that they have painstakingly worked with me to help me overcome my problems and to help me understand that I can be a great dog.
I’m a snuggly guy most of the time and love affection, and my foster dad says I’ve made some progress, but I still have a long way to go. I am very fearful and will react aggressively if someone reaches toward me or I otherwise feel threatened. I am embarrassed to say that I have attempted to bite and broken some skin on several occasions.
You know what, though? My foster dad is so patient and he wants to keep working with me. He says I tried to snap a number of times, but now I generally just growl when my foster approaches me. He knows now that he needs to talk to me sweetly first before reaching in for a pet (although I really do enjoy hanging out with the people). I also need drugs before I go to the vet.
I am sure I have it in me to be a loving houndie, but I will need a home that can meet me on my terms and work with me in a calm and loving manner.
I would do best in a quiet household with no children. I get along great with the other dog in the house, although I have had some minor struggles for dominance with the other male dog in the house.
I know I don’t sound perfect, but I really love to be with people, I love, love, love long walks, and I sure do want a loving home. I also love to play with toys and chase my squeaky ball.
However, I don’t like having anything put around my neck, and I don’t like being brushed or having my back touched. But … baby steps. I have just started letting Foster Dad touch my back! I’m still very much a work in progress, which is why CBHR and my fosters want to work with me longer before clearing me for adoption to a special home.
I will need a home with someone who can be firm about rules and doesn’t show fear and who will talk to me kindly. For example, I am content to hang out on the living room floor right next to Foster Dad – I am not allowed on the furniture and don’t mind at all. I am also learning to follow some commands.
CBHR is very good about talking with potential adopters to make sure they have all the information they need to make a successful match. Please don’t write me off. I have made strides. I’m still on hold while my fosters continue to give me positive reinforcement so I can keep making progress.
