About Me

*Ralph went to the bridge on June 26 following an extended illness. He lived out his last months as a well-loved member of a Forever Foster household. Run free, Ralph!*

Hello, all! I’m Ralph, and I walk into a party like I am walking onto a yacht. A mole strategically placed below one eye, my coat, it is apricot. But I’m not vain – just a bit hard of hearing. In fact, I’m a sweet-as-pie guy, about 12 years old, and my foster person says I’m an excellent houseguest with great manners. I am also housebroken.

My origins are a mystery to the folks at CBHR, but I wear my longtime anonymity like a badge. I came to CBHR after a two-week adventure evading capture by Animal Control after being spotted wandering along a country road in South Carolina. Finally weary of being on the run, I walked up to a house one day in September 2021 and scratched on the door. That’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.

Being a loner for so long, I sometimes prefer a little solitude to smothering attention, but I’m also learning to enjoy hanging out with the humans. My foster dad says I have a mind of my own – I like to keep you guessing. One minute, I might be resting happily at your feet. The next, I’m getting some alone time in the bedroom down the hall. Foster Dad says I’m an enigma, wrapped in a riddle, wrapped in bacon.

But don’t get me wrong – I have given up my wandering ways and am learning to love life with people. I enjoy long strolls and will let you know when it’s time to head out for my walk if you’re not moving fast enough. Don’t get me started about dinner – if you’re late, you’ll hear about it. You will know when it’s me, because, as Foster Dad says, I have an unmistakable happy bark that is part gravely voice, part Count-from-Sesame-Street laugh.

My unique bark is the result of chronic bronchitis and an enlarged heart, but they don’t bother me much. I can easily walk a mile a day. I take a pill for bronchitis twice daily, and I’m doing fine so far.

I am working on being better when walking on a leash and am making progress. I am good riding in cars and in crowds. I like grown-up people but don’t have much recent experience with the younger humans or cats.

Never was there a kinder, gentler, sweeter low-rider than me. If you have room in your heart and home for a sweet, amusing and occasionally mysterious hound, contact CBHR and tell them Ralph sent you!
