Hello, everybody! My name is Henry, and I am new to CBHR. When they took me in in late February, they noticed I had a lot of medical needs, including several fractures in my spine, which was compressing the spinal cord. They aren’t sure what happened to me, but it caused me lots of problems. I had trouble walking and had no bladder or bowel control.

The wonderful people at CBHR took me up to the N.C. State University Veterinary School, where I had surgery to decompress my spine. I will have a long recovery ahead of me, but as of March 4, I was released from the hospital. I will be cared for by an experienced vet for the next few weeks until I can be moved to a foster home. We all hope the surgery will help me live a normal life.

Cooper

Hi there! My name’s Cooper, and I’m looking for a very special forever home, one filled with patience, calm and kind voices. I’m a 6-year-old boy who just loves attention, but I am easily startled and I communicate by making what sounds like low growls.

I will need a forever family with no children and no other pets, and one that understands how best to work with me. You see, I don’t like negative corrections or raised voices, and I don’t like high-stress situations.

I do respond to positive reinforcement - for example, if you want me to drop something I shouldn’t have picked up, offer me one of my toys rather than uttering a stern “no.” (I will growl a real growl if you do, but my foster people have learned how to help me bring out my best self.)

Carolina Basset Hound RescueCarolina Basset Hound Rescue (CBHR) is a volunteer-staffed non-profit organization whose mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome unwanted basset hounds in North Carolina and South Carolina. CBHR is a fully recognized 501(c)3 organization.

All bassets are spayed or neutered, vaccinated, treated for heartworm disease if needed, and given a clean bill of health before being cleared for adoption. They stay in foster homes to facilitate emotional healing, address medical needs, manage behavioral issues, promote socialization and create an environment of love and safety for the dogs. Potential adopters are screened with a veterinary reference and a home visit. The goal is to match each of our bassets with a loving, forever home.
