Carolina Basset Hound Rescue (CBHR) is a volunteer-staffed, non-profit organization rescuing and placing stray, unwanted, neglected, and abandoned basset hounds in permanent homes. Due to limited resources, the concentration of CBHR is on bassets in the Carolinas. Rescued bassets primarily come from animal shelters in areas canvased by volunteers in various regions of North and South Carolina. Under certain circumstances, CBHR accepts owner-relinquished dogs. As with all breeds, overpopulation and owner irresponsibility contribute to an abundance of animals.
People often buy a basset hound on impulse. Basset hounds, as with all pets, require a tremendous amount of commitment (time & financial) and energy. Frequently, the acquisition of a basset hound is not thoroughly thought through. Once new owners realize the commitment a basset requires, they dispose of their new family member rather than honor the commitment they made to him or her.
Due to the high numbers of dogs in need of rescue from kill shelters, CBHR is unable to accept owner turned in dogs at this time.
CBHR only handles adoptions within North and South Carolina. For adoptions outside of the Carolinas, please visit the Daily Drool website to find a rescue organization in your area.
Hi, I’m Dinah! I’m a beautiful 5 year old red head with lots of freckles! I love people, including children and I love to walk—I think walks are so much fun. I am very affectionate and full of energy.
CBHR has had an explosion of vet bills the past month... about $5000 worth. We had to spend $1200 in one weekend due to emergency situations. Donations are down due to decreased adoptions and the difficult economy.
CBHR will be holding a Krispy Kreme fundraiser at the Raleigh fairgrounds Flea Market on Saturday, May 17. We'll have boxes of fresh Krispy Kreme donuts for sale all morning. Don't live in the Raleigh area? You can still help the CBHR bassets by purchasing vouchers good at any Krispy Kreme location.
CBHR has an urgent need for foster homes. In order to be a CBHR foster home all you have to do is feed and house a homeless hound until it is adopted. CBHR will provide all vet care, microchip, and will find a forever home for your foster basset hound. If assistance is needed for food, please let us know. CBHR is in a crisis situation with current foster homes full and bassets waiting in shelters for rescue.

By sponsoring one or more bassets from our Adopt a Hound page, you can help make a difference in a foster's life!
CBHR is pleased to offer a new program for our website. We are now offering memorials for our fur babies who have left this world. We would like to allow those who have lost pets to be able to offer a remembrance memorial with a picture to be listed on a special page of our website.
If you can't afford a cash donation, you can help us by shopping with merchants who will donate a portion of their profits to us! Even if you can donate, you can also help us even more by frequenting these merchants!
Don't forget to check HoundsBay (from the DailyDrool at www.dailydrool.com) and EBay for special auctions benefiting CBHR!
