Adoption

Carolina Basset Hound Rescue adopts dogs only within the Carolinas. CBHR does not adopt bassets to be given as gifts. CBHR will only accept adoption applications from the family where the basset will reside.

Thank you for your interest in adopting one of our beloved basset hounds. We look forward to working with you to find your new family member. At this time, we find ourselves in the unusual position of having many more approved adoption applications than available hounds. Most of our bassets are age 7 or older. Some have medical or special needs. There may be a wait of 6 months to a year or longer to find a younger dog. We have a list of approved adopters who will be contacted first when a younger dog becomes available.

Application Process

The adoption process begins once you complete an adoption application and pay the application fee. A CBHR representative will contact you as soon as possible to let you know your application has been received and is being processed. Once the application has been processed, we will review your application and contact you for a brief phone interview. Following the phone interview a CBHR volunteer will visit with you in your home. The home visit helps us get to know you and better understand your expectations for a new family member. This allows us to help identify the ideal basset match for you.

We request that you fill out the application as soon as you are ready to move forward with adoption as our basset population is always changing. Even if we don’t have the right dog at the moment, we very well may have your perfect fit by the time you are approved. Also, a dog you are interested in adopting today may have other interested adopters already in his queue. We maintain a “first come, first serve” list for each dog and the only way we can add your name to the list is if we have a completed adoption application and approved home visit.

Finding Your Basset

Once the application process is complete, you can talk with foster parents about specific dogs of interest to you. Please keep in mind the process from beginning to end can take a few weeks to several months. We want the match to be ideal for everyone, and our many volunteers are working hard to get your home visits completed as quickly as possible. Once you have taken home your new family member, your seven-day home trial period begins. At the end of the seven-day trial period or before, you may make the adoption final. If you choose not to adopt him, he will be returned to CBHR. You can then select another available basset for a home trial or can elect to have your adoption donation amount reimbursed.

We too are anxious to see our special hounds get a home of their own! If you have questions or need help throughout this process do not hesitate to contact us.

Thank you again for choosing to adopt. You are giving a homeless hound a home of his own!
